M17 The Omega Nebula

Located in The Constellation Sagittarius

 M17 - The Omega Nebula is part of a cloud of  gas that includes a star forming region.  This nebula was discovered in 1745 and is located in the constellation Sagittarius.  M17 is part of the region that contains M8 and M20.   M17 is a dim (magnitude 6.0) object and can only be seen with a telescope or binoculars.

    This image shows the distinctive hook shape of this nebula and revels it's expansion into space.  This nebula is an accumulation of hydrogen gas that is illuminated by stars within the nebula itself. 

   This is an image taken with a Meade 12" LX90-GPS for 8 minutes with an SBIG ST-2000 XCM single shot camera.
