M51 -The Whirlpool Galaxy  is likely one of the most well-known Galaxies. It is arguably one of the most beautiful galaxies!  M51 has suffered a recent collision with another galaxy, NGC 5195 and this is clearly visible at the northern edge of the galaxy.

This Galaxy is 37.5 million light years away and is a magnitude 9.0 object making it visible from dark locations only with the use of a telescope. To locate this Galaxy it helps to have and advanced knowledge of the sky or a telescope with a GOTO computerized system.

M51 has recently been imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope and revealed heavy dust lanes surrounding the Black Hole at it's center.
